Outlook of Geothermal Energy in Alberta

Like in all other sources of energy, there are also positive and negative outlooks on geothermal energy in Alberta. Some people believe that it’s an ideal source of alternative energy, while others think it would not suffice.

Here are some points regarding the outlook on geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy is a renewable form of energy. This means that there is very little likelihood that it will run out. This type of energy comes from the heat that emanates from the earth’s core, produced from the radioactive decay of elements in the earth’s interior such as uranium and potassium. Water, which produces the steam that makes geothermal systems work and provide power for electric generators, can also be replenished by rain.

However, the power produced by geothermal power plants can only be used in areas around them, since this power produced by these plants are very difficult to transport, unlike oil and some other fuel types.

Whereas one can say that we can simply drill wells in certain areas to be able to provide electricity in almost every part of the world, not all areas on the earth’s surface are suitable for geothermal power plants. The concentration of geothermal energy can be found along plate boundaries, where earthquake and volcanic risks are relatively higher than in other areas.

It is also important to note that geothermal energy is considered to be environment friendly. It is because the acquisition of power from geothermal energy does not involve burning fuel, thus, there is very little emission. Whereas there is a possibility of hazardous substances coming out from the underground together with the steam, power plants are already equipped with scrubbers other equipment to filter them off.
